What’s going on?

Art, Art on paper, Beeldende Kunst, Contemporary Art, Drawings, Mixed media, Painting

This work is a my painted version of a photo that was shared in the world by the media at the time a well know maverick was suddenly being hospitalized with a presumably intoxication during the COVID-19 pandemie, somewhat a year ago now. Driven by my heartfelt worries about the subject of the matter and the whole mystery surrounding it, I just had to paint this newsphoto to try to comprehend what was going on here. It took me some time to finish it. Work was made between september 2020 and february 2021.

A photo work with myself as part of the composition. The image is about spaces, to be a part of the space. It is about being part of the environment your in.  Which doesn’t always mean you are being seen. You can also be a mayor part of something but at the same time be in another place.  The head under the curtain emphasizes on concentration of own thoughts.

Is the person looking outside through a window an active element in the room or is he secondary to the room he is part of. What does he see what we can’t or cannot be a part of, only in our imagination.

I called the work Hypo, which is the greek word for under.

The work ( a combination of photo and paint on canvas) is my contribution in a competition for the Christine Award 2018 at Nieuwe Akademie Utrecht.

Which is about making a photo ( work ) which includes yourself in any way or another

The Sun Has Shone That Day

Versie 3

This Picture is taken om the big busy square in front of the Museo d’ Art Contemporani    (MACBA) in Barcelona, sort of hidden in the area of El Raval. There were a few things going on when I came out of my museum visit, a girl eating a little snack, a school class playing outside, people crossing and in front of the entrance of the building there were these two guys playing with a skateboard. The sun was so bright that this situation in mostly black and white, due to the white sunny building and there clothes made me decide to shoot a serie of pictures of the two. I didn’t do anything about the setting of the models, they were talking and walking and suddenly, as if they didn’t want to participate in my photo shooting, they stopped doing what they did… I pressed the camera button. Together they made the image. The sun shone that day.

Last saturday it was given the second price at the yearly organised competition for the Christine Award at the Nieuwe Akademie Utrecht. My contribution was discussed and judged by a jury excisting of o.a. Jan Teun van Rees ( kunstenaar/docent fotoacademie)  en Ilona Plaum ( fotograaf/kunstenares)
